Celebrating 250 Years of P&S: We Don’t Just Practice Medicine. We Change It.
As P&S has shaped medical innovation over the past 250 years, visionary philanthropy has been essential in making our global leadership possible. Join us in making a gift on the occasion of our 250th anniversary.
P&S Scholarships: A Vision for "Debt-Free" Education
P&S is consistently ranked in the top 10 medical schools in the nation, bringing the most talented future leaders of medicine and biomedical research to our campus for education and training. One of our top priorities is increasing scholarship funding, so we can continue bringing the most brilliant young minds to P&S. Scholarships are critical for P&S to attract the most capable and diverse student population.
In preparation for this historic year, P&S formed an Anniversary Steering Committee, chaired by P. Roy Vagelos, M.D., to develop a plan for our year-long celebration. The Committee identified as our fundraising priority the vision to become a “debt-free” school for our medical students. Our aim is to eliminate need-based loans and provide all financial aid through scholarships.
Roy and his wife Diana have committed $25 million in matching funds to a new scholarship campaign to further this goal. Their gift will match new endowed scholarship gifts 1:1 as outlined on the P&S 250th Anniversary Scholarship Challenge.
This is the first phase in our effort to raise $150 to $200 million in endowed scholarship support. Achieving this goal at P&S would enable students in need of financial aid to receive P&S scholarships only rather than a combination of loans and scholarships. This debt reduction program would make P&S more affordable and make it easier for our graduates to pursue career options in fields such as primary care, research, and community service. As a result, this program will ensure P&S’s leadership position in medical education for the next 250 years, while changing not only our institution but the landscape of medicine in perpetuity. We hope you will participate in this historic fundraising challenge.

Reflecting on 250 Years and the Next 250
Thanks to the generosity and commitment of our alumni, faculty, and friends, P&S has been able to pursue the most pressing questions in medicine—and devise the clinical solutions that save and improve lives. Philanthropic partners of P&S provide crucial support for our medical education efforts, ensuring Columbia can continue to graduate the nation’s top doctors and biomedical researchers.
From an early and foundational endowment gift by William Henry Vanderbilt to the exceptional generosity of today’s leadership donors, P&S has benefited from transformative charitable giving. We celebrate the generous supporters who have made the accomplishments of our alumni, faculty, and researchers possible. Equally important, we thank our current and next-generation donors for advancing medicine by investing in our future and in our vibrant student life on campus.
With your generous partnership we look ahead with anticipation to another 250 years of success, as P&S continues to change the course of medical history.
